Offaly projects to benefit from €855,000 in greenway funding

Offaly projects are set to benefits after €855,000 in greenway funding has been announced for the county today (March 5) as part of €67 million in national greenway funding.

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State Seán Canney and Minister of State Jerry Buttimer announced the funding for Greenways and National Roads Active Travel infrastructure through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

The allocation will also be used to fund approximately 60 Greenway schemes across the country.

One project set to benefit from the funding is the Greenway from Edenderry to the Kildare County boundary.

“There is huge excitement in the community around the completion of the greenway," said John Clendennen TD. "I look forward to the delivery of new and expanded routes in the coming years."

Deputy Clendennen added that the continued expansion of Offaly's walking and cycling network through Greenway infrastructure is crucial in offering safe travel options to cyclists and pedestrians.

“I’m delighted to see that €855,000 has been allocated for Greenways in Offaly. This funding will be used for the development of walking and cycling facilities that offer safe, sustainable, and healthier transportation options to communities.

“Our Greenway plays an important role in supporting local communities to create jobs and brings visitors to our area.

“Greenways across Ireland have been a huge success, showcasing our beautiful landscape, bringing visitors to overlooked areas and helping local businesses to thrive and create a space in our communities that everyone can enjoy."
