The late Pat Smullen.

New listed raced named in memory of Pat Smullen

A new race called after the late Offaly jockey Pat Smullen is to be held in Naas in early July.

The race, the Pat Smullen Stakes, has been sanctioned as a listed race by the European Pattern Committee (EPC) for 2025.

The Pat Smullen Stakes will be raced over 8 furlongs at Naas in early-July and horses will receive similar allowances to those in the Irish EBF Median Sires Series.

Jonathan Mullin, Director of Racing at Horse Racing Ireland, said the Pat Smullen Stakes at Naas in July, feeds into the strategic policy around producing and retaining quality middle-distance and staying horses,

He said it was “fitting that the newest addition to the Irish Pattern roster should be named in honour and in memory of one of our finest riders.”
