Killina students win Tullamore Credit Union's Face the Phoenix

Tullamore Credit Union held the Face the Phoenix live final on Tuesday, January 28, in the Esker Arts Centre Tullamore.

This is the credit union’s version of the popular tv show Dragon’s Den.

Every year, students from the Transition Year classes of the local secondary schools in the area are invited to go head to head and showcase their mini company ideas. This year’s competition saw entries from Coláiste Choilm, Killina Presentation Secondary School, Mercy School Kilbeggan and Tullamore College.

After making individual presentations to the Siobhain Arnold and Keira Williams of Tullamore Credit Union, finalists were whittled down for the live final. Some 14 finalists from the 4 schools, appeared onstage, made their presentation, and answered questions from the judges. The judges on the day were Paul Shaw, CEO, Eileen Brophy, Chairperson and Matt Worgan, Risk Manager, all of Tullamore Credit Union. All students demonstrated high standards with their products and their presentations such that for the first time since this competition began the scores were so close that a joint third place was awarded.

1st place went to Charlotte Matthews and Paige Quinn Flynn, representing Killina Presentation Secondary School with their business ‘Scentsible’ – Room Scent Sprays & Mini Lavender pillows

2nd place went to Emma Tandy, Alice Pierson, Marie Coyne and Amy Jackson with their business `Frame Fusion` - representing Mercy School Kilbeggan – Personalised homemade button & scrabble picture frames.

Joint 3rd place went to Andrea Meciontye representing Tullamore College with her business ‘Little Helper’ – Grabber for people with dwarfism and self-designed education book on Dwarfism and to Sinead Ryan, Blaithin Clarke and Muireann Coyne also representing Tullamore College for their business – ‘Rejuvenate Design House’- Homemade tote bags and scrunchies using recycled material.

A big congratulations to all the students who took part and their teachers who assisted with the competition this year.
