Offaly councillor and general election candidate Eddie Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick calls for increased Garda presence in Portarlington and Edenderry

Independent general election candidate Eddie Fitzpatrick has said there's concern about the current number of Gardai stationed in Portarlington and Edenderry, and called for an increased Garda presence in both towns.

He also said both stations ought to be open to the public on a 24-hour basis, "due to the increasing population numbers across this region where crime and drugs has become more prevalent."

The Offaly County Council member pointed out that Edenderry and Portarlington had been recognised in the recent County Development plans as commuter towns.

By definition, this meant their populations were growing and more services were needed at off-peak hours as well as the traditional 9-5 hours, he said.

"While appreciating that there is currently a shortage in Gardai numbers, it is encouraging to hear that there are more Gardai Trainees due to graduate from Templemore this year, than ever before," stated Cllr Fitzpatrick.

"I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister for Justice after the General Election, if elected on November 29.

"At this meeting, I will be seeking an assurance that both Edenderry and Portarlington receive more recruits. I will also request that both stations be reclassified as 24 hours stations.

"Both towns have seen a huge increase in their respective population as recorded in the recent census results with Edenderry recording a population which has increased to 8,000 constituents, while Portarlington has risen to over 10,000," concluded Cllr Fitzpatrick.
