Proposed changes to Tullamore bridge 'make sense'

by Orlaith Delaney

The proposed changes to the layout and road traffic markings at Bury Bridge in Tullamore, also known as Whitehall Bridge, will proceed.

The decision was made at the most recent meeting of Offaly County Council on Monday, October 24, at which councillors were told that only one submission on the plans was received.

The submission was made by Waterways Ireland over concerns about changes to the structure of the bridge and parapet wall, as the bridge is a protected structure, and council staff will continue consultations with Waterways Ireland through the design and construction phases of the project.

The proposed changes were welcomed by the councillors, many of whom noted that the number of schools in the area meant “hundreds of students” used the bridge every day.

Offaly County Council Cathaoirleach Councillor Tony McCormack said the bridge “was so dangerous it was nearly safe because people who knew it approached it with caution”.

He said there was “potential for a serious incident” there, and that he was “delighted we are doing something about this”.

Cllr Declan Harvey said that locals are happy about the proposed changes as they “make sense” and will make the bridge and surrounding areas safe.

Cllr Aoife Masterson noted the safety issues this bridge presents, especially in the dark evenings. She said people were looking forward to the development.

The proposed works will include narrowing the road to make it suitable for one-way traffic only, tightening of the junction at St Brigid's Place and Convent Road, the introduction of three controlled pedestrian crossings on Daingean Rd and Convent Road, as well as an uncontrolled crossing on the junction of Bury Bridge and Daingean Road.

There will also be new kerbing and footpaths on the L-2023-1 at Convent Road and on the bridge.
