MEP Walsh 'concerned about Trump's policies' as he prepares to return to office
Maria Walsh, MEP for Midlands North West, has congratulated Donald Trump on his presidential election victory in the US, but said she has "serious concerns" about his policies.
Ms Walsh, who holds both Irish and US citizenship, said: "While I fully respect the democratic outcome, I have serious concerns about the policies and positions President Trump campaigned on.
"I fear how his views and policies could negatively impact women, minority and marginalised groups in society and how his actions may influence others around the world."
The Fine Gael representative, who secured re-election to the European Parliament in June, said: "The US presidential election should be a wake-up call for the EU.
"We already knew that defence would be a major topic for this term and that is even truer now. The European Union needs to be better prepared in terms of security, while respecting the position of those member States who are military neutral.
"Our businesses and communities need continued EU support through investment, greater competitiveness and job creation. We also need to ensure better future preparedness in case of unforeseen crises, like another global health pandemic.
"That all requires a robust EU budget and ensuring the union is ready to react quickly and effectively when needed.
"There is an opportunity for the EU to have a stronger voice on the world stage: by promoting its founding values and defending democracy. The incoming new High Representative, Kaja Kallas, will have an incredibly important role in that regard.
"As Ireland's Commissioner-designate was reminding MEPs during his hearing yesterday, the Charter of Fundamental Rights is enshrined into EU law. Michael McGrath has a job of work ahead to ensure that the Rule of Law prevails and that all member States respect our core EU values.
"The EPP Group, of which Fine Gael is a member, has always prioritised the rule of law and will continue to do so. If you want to benefit from EU funds, then follow the rules and values that are part of membership.
"The union is far from perfect - it is sometimes very hard to achieve consensus on sensitive issues. However, all member States must respect and stand up for our founding values: human dignity; freedom; democracy; equality; rule of law; human rights. We need to preserve our core values. That's how the EU can be a beacon of hope for global democracy.
"From an Irish perspective, I have no doubt that Ireland and the USA's historic bond will remain strong. The unique legacy of the Irish in American life is evident right across the US", the MEP concluded.
