Coláiste Naomh Cormac School News October 7-11

County Sports

On Thursday, October 3, Coláiste Naomh Cormac (CNC) sent a strong team of athletes to the Tullamore Harriers to compete in the LOETB County Sports Athletics competition. A total of 90 athletes from CNC competed in a range of track and field events against five other Offaly schools. A great day was had by all, with excellent athletic ability on display.

Athletes from Coláiste Naomh Cormac came away with nine gold medals, nine silver medals and 16 bronze medals in the individual events.

CNC also put in a very strong team performance, finishing third in the Junior category and second in the Intermediate and Senior categories.

The excellent individual performances on the day helped CNC claim second in the overall competition awards.

CNC expressed its appreciation to all students and and the staff who helped to prepare the team for the day, as well as running of events on the day, in particular Ms Hennessy for organising the sports event for the entire county.

Open Night

CNC would like to express its gratidude to all prospectus students, parents and guardians who attended their open night on October 9. They would like to send a special thank you to their amazing staff, students, and the Parents' Association for making this event a huge success and showcasing the best of their school community.

Badminton Fundraiser

Judy Bryant, CNC Badminton coach, would like to thank everyone in CNC for their support in raising funds for the Kilcormac/Killoughey Badminton Club. Adam Screeney, who won his first All-Ireland title in badminton with CNC is seen wearing the prize, a team-signed KK U20 jersey. The lucky winner was Ciara Slevin. CNC would also like to thank Judy for all her hard work in promoting badminton in the school.

TY Barista Course

TY students are currently taking part in the Barista Course at the LOETB Tullamore. Over the duration of the course, students will learn about the different types of coffee beans, milk frothing, latte art and equipment maintenance. On completion, students will be fully certified baristas. Many thanks to everyone in the LOETB for facilitating the course.

Comhairle na n-Óg

Several CNC students took part in Comhairle na n-Óg Youth Conference, where they were given the opportunity to express their opinions on a variety of topics such as transport, lack of youth activities and the environment. Over the course of the day, there were several guest speakers, including Irish sevens' star Jordan Conroy. A great day was had by all.

Junior Cycle Results

Congratulations to all our TY and 5th Year students who received their Junior Cycle results yesterday. Your dedication, commitment and hard work has paid off. We are all so incredibly proud of you.

Book Club

At this week's book club meeting, students gathered to discuss the success of their Book Club stand at Open Night, share their thoughts on their current novel ‘The Rooftoppers’, and brainstorm ideas for the Upcoming Well-Read Award 2024/2025.

World Mental Health Day

To mark World Mental Health Day, which fell on October 10, students participated in activities focused on wellbeing and positive mental health. These activities encouraged them to reflect on the various ways they support their own mental health. As part of the day, students also watched Niall Breslin’s ‘A Lust for Life: My 1,000 Hours’, which provided further insights into the importance of maintaining mental wellbeing.

Best of Luck Lucy

CNC would like to wish the best of luck to 5th Year student Lucy Fitzgerald, captain of the Athlone Town FC team, as they face Shelbourne in the WU19 Cup Final. The match will take place on Sunday, October 13, at Tolka Park.

Athlone Town FC will also compete in the WU17 Cup Final against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday, October 19, and Lucy also plays on this team. CNC wishes the best of luck to Lucy and the entire team, and reminds her that everyone at the school is behind you.

GOAL Jersey Day

CNC would like to express its appreciation to all the staff and students who took part in their GOAL Jersey Day. The school community raised €452 to support this worthy cause.

The Senior Camogie team put up a great battle against Kilkenny team Castlecomer, but were beaten by a score line of 2-7 to 1-9.
