Netflix teen hit comedy being filmed at Charleville Castle

Filming on the Emmy-award winning Netflix show, Wednesday, has been taking place at Charleville Castle in recent weeks, with the local rumour mill going into overdrive at reports that at least one half of Hollywood power couple, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas, may have been in the Offaly capital over the past few days.

Catherine Zeta Jones plays the role of Wedneday Addam's mother, Morticia, in the fantastical teen comedy which has become a huge hit on Netflix, and is directed by American film director, Tim Burton.

Burton, who has been responsible for some of Hollywood's most iconic gothic horror and fantasy films such as 'Beetlejuice' and 'Corpse Bride' has been “a regular visitor” to Charleville Castle, according to Dudley Stewart, from the Castle's Heritage Trust, who confirmed that “a number of scenes” for the new Netflix series of Wednesday have been shot in Tullamore.

“We will not be part of the credits for the production, so viewers will have to watch closely to see if they can pick out the scenes that were shot in Tullamore, like the Castle interior, the forest scenes and some overhead scenes as well” he told the Offaly Independent.

Mr. Stewart described Tim Burton as being “very friendly” with the team in Charleville Castle, which he has visited on “numerous occasions” and he expressed the hope that many more productons can be made at the iconic Tullamore location in the future.

Pointing out that scenes for “over 30 Hollywood movies” have already been shot on location at Charleville Castle, Dudley Stewart said the costs associated with bringing big productions to the Offaly capital are “very high” and that it is difficult to compete with the bigger studios, most of which are based around Dublin and Wicklow.

“The scenes which were shot for Wednesday around the Castle are spectacular, and I would hope that gradually this will become a acceptable and viable location for film making in the future, as we have a very good reputation and nothing ever goes wrong here” he said.

Her confirmed that filming on Season 2 of Wednesday for Netflix has “wrapped up for now” with the cast not expected to return to Tullamore until next month.

As to whether Catherine Zeta Jones was actually in Tullamore during the week, or will be arriving here next month, Mr. Stewart would neither confirm nor deny the rumour.
