MEP Barry Cowen appointed to EU-UK trade agreement monitoring committee
MEP Barry Cowen has been appointed to the Monitoring Committee for trade agreement negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The Fianna Fáil politician has been chosen as the representative for the Renew Europe group on the European Parliament committee.
This appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as the EU embarks on it's first major trade negotiations with the UK in the post-Brexit era.
Commenting on his appointment, MEP Cowen stated: "It is essential that Ireland's unique position, role, and interests are reflected in this important trade deal.
"I will work diligently to ensure that these considerations are taken into account in any proposed agreement."
As a member of the Monitoring Committee, MEP Cowen will play a key role in overseeing the development of the trade deal, and ensuring that the agreement also reflects the interests of Ireland.
Ireland's role in this negotiation is of particular importance due to its close economic, political, and geographical ties to both the EU and the UK.
