Cowen welcomes approval of three new veterinary schools

Barry Cowen, Member of the European Parliament for Ireland's Midlands–North-West constituency, has expressed his delight at the government’s decision to approve three new locations for veterinary schools in Mountbellew, Letterkenny, and Kilkenny.

Until now, Ireland had only one veterinary school, based at University College Dublin.

“In particular, I welcome the inclusion of a new vet school at Mountbellew  Agricultural College, a mainstay in the provision of agricultural training and education in the Midlands–North-West region.” said Cowen.

Cowen congratulated the principal of Mountbellew, Dr Edna Curley, as well as the chairperson and members of the board, for their successful campaign in showcasing Mountbellew’s capacity to provide vital training for future veterinarians.

Cowen also highlighted his recent meeting in Brussels with the animal health products organisation Zoetis, where he proposed a new scholarship programme for veterinary students, in recognition of the company’s continued success in Ireland.
