Edenderry group raises over €1,800 for cancer charity with walking event

It was a case of two birds with one stone for Edenderry Slimming World group when they recently raised over €1,800 for the Irish Cancer Society.

The group organised a walk around their local area on August 31, with a double aim of getting some exercise while fundraising for a worthy cause.

The 'Steps for Smiles' fundraiser was part of an overall Slimming World campaign, which this year chose the Irish Cancer Society as the beneficiary.

According to the fundraising page set up by Cian Slevin from the Edenderry Slimming World, “by 2030 it is predicted that the greatest cause of cancer in this country will be obesity.

“Therefore we as a Slimming World group have decided we have to do our part to promote healthy living and contribute to the great work that the Irish Cancer Society does.”

Edenderry Slimming World raised a total of €1,844 for the charity, and around 30 people took part in the walk around Edenderry area, which covered about seven kilometers in total.

Cian said Edenderry Slimming World would be marking its first anniversary on November 2.

“The groups are hugely successful, with our members achieving great results on their weight loss journeys," she said.

“We have a lot of membership deals and offers at the moment for anyone wanting to join and lose weight for Christmas, details of which can be found on our social media pages.”

The group currently meets in the Edenderry Parish Centre in Edenderry every Thursday at 8am, 9:30am, 5:30pm and 7pm. Anybody interested in joining the group can come along to one of the meetings.
