Borehole of 1,000 metres depth to be drilled in Tullamore

The Geological Survey of Ireland is inviting tenders from companies to provide geological information from a 1,000 metre deep borehole it plans to drill in Tullamore.

A division of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, GSI is Ireland's public earth science knowledge centre.

The GSI's Drilling Unit is planning two one-kilometre deep boreholes, one in Tullamore and one in Cork City.

It is now advertising for external service companies to undertake 'downhole geophysical logging' during the work. This refers to the a method of making measurements in drill holes and geologically interpreting these measurements

The boreholes will be cored vertically at at a diameter 75.7 mm, with a planned total vertical depth of 1,000 metres.

The GSI said the borehole in Tullamore would be completed in September and logging services required then, whilst the Cork project will conclude at the end of the year and/or early next year.

Maps provided by the GSI indicate the Tullamore borehole is planned for a location in the Clonminch Lane area of the town.
