Alzheimer Society to deliver family carer training course in Tullamore

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland has announced that it will deliver a seven-week family carer training course in Tullamore, starting next month.

'Insights into Dementia – Informing and Empowering Family Carers' is the title of the award-nominated course, which will provide positive and practical training that develops knowledge of dementia and caring skills.

The free, seven-week course will take place on Mondays, from September 9 until October 21, between 7pm and 9.30pm in the Tullamore Court Hotel.

The course seeks to increase participants' confidence in response to the changing demands of caring for a family member living with dementia. It also offers an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and support each other.

An estimated 1,108 people live with dementia in Offaly, and 64,000 people live with the condition in Ireland.

Offaly native Dr Fergus Timmons, an External Learning and Development Manager, said: "We are very pleased to run this course in Tullamore. Dementia can be very difficult for family members as they see the gradual impact of the disease on the person they are caring for.

"This course will give participants an opportunity to learn more about the disease and gain some practical suggestions which they can try to use at home.

"Previous participants have found it helpful and supportive to hear from each other. All course participants will receive a free information pack with lots of useful resources and information."

A previous participant of face-to-face Family Carer Training commented: "The tutor was very knowledgeable and engaging, and gave very practical examples from her vast experience. The course was excellent; I was very satisfied with the content and delivery of the course.”
