KNEECAP announced as finale for film festival in Birr

The award-winning film KNEECAP has been announced as the finale for the Moonlit Movies series in Birr.

The film will be screened on Saturday September 7 at the Courthouse Yard.

After its release on August 8, the Irish language film has become one of the most talked about releases of the year.

Coordinator of Moonlit Movies Gary Hoctor said: “We are so excited to give film lovers in Offaly a unique opportunity to see one of the most exciting Irish films in recent years as part of Moonlit Movies. We couldn’t think of a better finale to our innovative series of outdoor screenings than KNEECAP.”

The biopic sees the hip-hop trio, Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí, playing themselves with Academy Award Nominee Michael Fassbender in tow laying down a global rallying cry for the defence of native cultures.

KNEECAP won the Audience Prize: NEXT at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival last year after being the first-ever Irish language film to screen at the American film festival.

Film fans will also have the opportunity to watch a series of iconic Irish films in some of the most unique locations in Offaly.

Screenings include Handsome Devil in association with Offaly Local Development Company in support of Offaly Pride at Kinnitty Castle on Saturday 24 August, a double header at Birr Castle with The Commitments on Friday 30 August and Sing Street on Saturday 31 August.

Along with showcasing the best of cult Irish cinema, the Moonlit Movies experience also includes food by local vendors at the different screenings and is included in the ticket price.
