Offaly motor club's grass autocross takes place next weekend

Birr & District Motor Club's popular Grass Surface Autocross takes place on Sunday, August 25.

The event is a counting round of the Shannon Trophies National Grass Surface Autocross Championship and the CJN Plant Ltd. & Barrett International Transport Munster Autocross Championship.

Entrants from all over Ireland, some as young as 13 years old will converge on Oxpark, Cloughjordan where the event is hosted by the kind permission of Kenneth Grant. Buggies, Specials, Saloons and Super Saloons will tackle a course laid out by Clerk of the Course, David Percy and his team.

The event will consist of 4 timed runs. Each run will be 3 laps of the track. The best timed run of 1 and 2 will be totalled with the best timed run of 3 and 4 to give overall times. The track may be modified after run 2 to avoid ruts in the track. The track will be marked with flags and arrows, where a penalty of 5 seconds will be incurred for striking or passing on the wrong side of a standing red marker/flag.

The driver with the Fastest Time of the Day will be presented the Billy Cavanagh Memorial Trophy in honour of Billy, a Birr & District Motor Club member who was a record-making 6-time winner of the National Grass Surface Autocross Championship, clinching the title between 1978 and 1983. The Cavanagh family continue to be involved in Autocross with the third generation now competing and marshalling around the country.

The Tom O'Reilly Memorial Cup will be awarded to the fastest Birr & District Motor Club member. This award is in memory of one of the founder members of the club and who was Chairperson for many years. The Cup alternates between fastest Club Member in a Buggy/Special and a Saloon/Super Saloon. For 2024, it will be awarded to the fastest Saloon/Super Saloon Driver.

Both of these awards will be hotly contested along with the multiple class awards that are up for grabs.

Spectators are welcome and the venue will be sign-posted from Cloughjordan. All visitors please obey the Marshals and Officials instructions, always stand in a safe place.

There will be no admission charge to the site, but the club is hosting a fundraiser for Cloughjordan No.1 National School in aid of upgrades to their school grounds.

Practice runs of the track will commence at 10am with the Timed Runs to start at 10.30am. Live timing can be followed at www.stopastride.live/upcoming.php.
