Sinn Fein candidate for the Edenderry area, Claire Murray, accepts congratulations after she became the second Sinn Fein candidate to be elected to Offaly County Council.

Sinn Féin takes second seat in Offaly

The big story here is that Sinn Féin has taken the last seat in the Edenderry Electoral Area, with outgoing Cllr, Robert McDermott losing out by a little over 100 votes.

The results of the 6th and final count are just in from Edenderry, and both Sinn Féin's Claire Murray and Fine Gael's Noel Cribben were elected without reaching the quota of 1,251.

The election of Claire Murray for Sinn Féin in Edenderry is the second success for the party in Offaly today, with Aoife Masterson taking one of the seven council seats in the Tullamore area.

The remaining Sinn Féin candidate, Sean Maher, in Birr, is still in the hunt to take a third seat for the party in the Birr electoral area.

The results of the final count for Edenderry are as follows:

Cribbin Noel (FG): 1,185 (+142)

McDermott Robert (FF): 1,012 (+145)
