Ballinamere NS and Killeigh NS take top honours at schools quiz
Ballinamere NS and Killeigh NS took the honours in the Tullamore Credit Union Primary Schools Quiz competition last week.
The event took place in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Wednesday February 21, with 225 primary school students representing 23 schools taking part in what has become one of the most hotly contested competitions in the local school calendar.
Deputy CEO of Tullamore Credit Union Caroline Collins Murphy opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone and introducing Chairperson Liam O’Callaghan, who told those in attendance that Tullamore Credit Union is the fifth largest Credit Union in the country with a membership of 36,000 members.
There was great support on the night from both parents and teachers. Upon registration each child who participated was given a voucher for €5 to lodge to a new or existing Credit Union account, in the hopes it would encourage them to start a lifetime of sensible saving.
Quizmaster Ger Scully had set 60 brain-teasing questions that had many of the adults present, scratching their heads, but not the students! The standard of general knowledge was excellent as the final scores showed. The competition was a dual one with students from 3rd & 4th class competing in the Junior competition while 5th and 6th class students answered an extra two rounds to compete for the Senior Competition. Both competitions saw the requirement for a tie-breaker session, indicating how closely contested this competition was.
The winners were: Senior Competition: 1st Ballinamere NS; 2nd Gaelscoil An Eiscir Riada NS; 3rd Ballyboy NS; 4th Ballinagar NS
Junior Competition: 1st Killeigh NS; 2nd Durrow NS; 3rd Scoil Eoin Phóil II NS; 4th Ballinamere NS
The first prize was a plaque for each team member, a plaque for the school and €100 voucher for each team member. Second prize was a €75 voucher for each team member. Third prize was a €50 voucher for each team member and fourth prize was a €35 voucher for each team member.
The four winning senior teams will represent Tullamore Credit Union in the CUDA National Final in the Crown Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, on March 2.
