No progress on proposed Pilgrim's Walk Greenway
The long-standing proposal to construct a section of Greenway along the route of the Pilgrim’s Walk to Clonmacnoise is no nearer completion, according to a response given at a meeting of Athlone Moate Municipal District heard last week.
The issue was raised by Athlone-based Fianna Fail Cllr, Aengus O’Rourke who sought answers as to how far the project had progressed, or if there had been any advance on what he described as the “long-standing proposal” to bring the project to fruition.
In a written response from Westmeath County Council to the question, they stated that “preliminary work” has already been undertaken on the project by consultants to Offaly County Council, in conjunctions with the Transportation Department of the Westmeath local authority.
However, the response also stated that, following the publication of the national NTA Cycle Connects network, the Greenway project along the Pilgrim’s Walk will only be progressed “in the context of county and regional priorities.”
