Motorists were speeding in Tullamore and Edenderry on 'Slow Down Day'

'National Slow Down Day' was held this week, but some motorists in Offaly didn't take the message on board.

The road safety initiative ran from 7am yesterday (Tuesday) until 7am today. During the first ten hours, GoSafe operators checked the speeds of more than 113,000 vehicles and found 405 to be travelling excess of the speed limit.

In Offaly, one motorist was found to be driving at 88km per hour in a 50km zone on the Arden Road in Tullamore.

Another car, on the R402 at Rathmore, Edenderry, was clocked at 78km per hour, also in a 50km zone.

On the M6 motorway at Killavally, Tyrrellspass, Westmeath, near the border with Offaly, two vehicles were found to have breached the speed limit during the day yesterday, driving at 138km and 135km per hour in the 120km zone.

Elsewhere in the Midlands, there was a car driving at 113km per hour in an 80km zone on the R445 at Greatheath, Portlaoise.

Nationally, the most significant breach of a speed limit yesterday was on the N6 at Baile An Phoill, Gaillimh, where a driver was detected travelling at 117km per hour in a 50km zone.

An Garda Síochána said it would continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed-related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on roads.
