Approval for €20m retail park 'opens door for major retailers to come to Tullamore'

A local TD has welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant final planning approval for a €20 million retail development in Tullamore, saying it will "open the door" for major retailers to locate in the town after "years of stagnation".

A lengthy planning process, which began more than two years ago, has now culminated in the green light being given to 'The Riverside Development' at the former Coen's builder's yard on Church Road.

The retail-led mixed-use town centre development is set to include a garden centre, retail units, a cinema, and restaurant facilities.

It's being developed by Grapemont Ltd, a subsidiary of Tullamore's Flanagan Development.

Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen said he was "delighted and indeed relieved" to learn that An Bord Planala had approved the €20m project.

"I want to congratulate and wish local businessman Tony Flanagan, who heads up the development, every success with this venture," said Deputy Cowen.

"His initiative can generate up to 100 construction jobs and a further possible 240 jobs when operational.

"I have no doubt this investment can and will be the forerunner for further developments which can only improve footfall and trade for the town's traders."
