Minister officially launches Tullamore flood defence scheme
Local Independent Councillor Sean O’Brien has welcomed the official launch of the flood defences for Whitehall, Oaklee and Daingean Road, which he said ensures that this area is now one of the safest in the country.
“I am delighted that this new flood defence system is completed and fully functioning. I was glad to be present when the Minister Brian Hayes officially launched the scheme on Tuesday when we were assured by the Minister and the officials of the OPW that this scheme will fully protect all the houses in the area from flooding,” stated Cllr O’Brien.
“Houses in Whitehall were affected when the area flooded in 2010 and also 20 years previously. The local residents and the council fought hard to have these flood defences built and the result is a great tribute to all involved. The work was well planned in consultation with all involved and the standard of workmanship is excellent. The finish is top class with walls built and all grass area damage fully restored,” outlined Cllr O’Brien.
“Houses on Daingean Road were also under threat as were the new houses in Oaklee. These new flood defence measures will now protect the whole area. I am happy to say that we are now living in one of the safest areas in the country as regards a threat of flooding,” concluded Cllr O’Brien.
