Fancy a wild food walk
With the Grand Canal both an amenity and an attraction that has been getting more attention of late, a group of locals have come together to promote another aspect of its benefits - its bountiful harvest of plants for food and healing.
On Saturday week, September 20, this group will embark on its second 'Wild Food Walk’, leaving from near L’Estrange Bridge on the Cloghan-Shannonbridge Road at 10.30am under the guidance of well-known forager, chef and lover of good food Mary Bulfin.
Carol Bergin, who is organising next week’s walk, explained what she took from the first walk.
“It’s a combination of treasure hunt, physical workout and learning experience,” she said, “and it’s so important for our health to be aware of these simple foods and remedies that our grandparents knew so well.”
The walk, which will conclude at approximately 12.30pm, will be followed by an informal workshop, where some foods and remedies will be prepared.
The cost of the event is €15 and booking is essential by contacting Carol on 090 6457934 or cdbergin@gmail.com.
