Gardaí appeal for help identifying man suspected of sexual assault in Co Cork
Gardaí in Co Cork have asked for the public's help in identifying a man suspected of an incident of sexual assault that occurred against a teenager.
On March 29th, 2024, a teenage girl was walking through Macroom, heading towards a local gym, when she first noticed a man sitting on a low wall near the town’s bridge on Castle Street.
The man is thought to be in his 30s, of medium height and build and dark hair. He was wearing a black hoodie and black and grey work pants.
As she passed the man, he began walking behind her over the bridge towards North Square. For the next few minutes, until they reached Main Street, the two passed each other several times, with the man often walking close to the victim.
The teenager went into a local hotel to access the gym and the man followed closely behind. It was in a corridor of the hotel, near the exit to the rear car park, where the incident occurred.
After the incident, the suspect left through the back car park, running towards a laneway that brought him back onto Main Street. It was around here that he removed his hoodie revealing a red Liverpool football training t-shirt underneath.
The suspect made his way back down Castle Street towards the bridge. From here, it is unknown where he went but gardaí believe he may have been collected in a vehicle.
The case will be mentioned in Monday night's edition of Crimecall on RTÉ One.
Inspector Anthony Harrington from Macroom Garda Station told Crimecall that it was a "frightening experience" for the victim that left her "terrified and extremely shaken."
Inspector Harrington is asking people who may have seen the suspect or recognise his description to contact gardaí. He also believes the suspect may have recorded part of the incident on his phone and are asking anyone who may have received a recording that matches the description of this incident to get in touch.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimecall on 1800 40 50 60 or Macroom Garda Station on 026-20590
