Offaly's Alex Dunne creates sporting history with maiden Formula 2 success
Offaly's Alex Dunne created a moment of sporting history when he claimed a maiden FIA Formula Two victory for Ireland with victory in the Bahrain grand prix feature race on Sunday.
A rising star in international motor sport, this inaugural victory further enhances the Clonbollogue native's impressive track record.
Dunne competed in Formula 3 last year but progressed to F2 for the 2025 season, racing with the Rodin team.
Capitalising on errors from his rivals, Dunne made a positive start to the race progressing to second position at the close of the opening lap.
Maintaining momentum, Dunne claimed race ascendancy on lap seven overtaking leader Leonardo Fornaroli, his composure proving vital in the closing stages of the grand prix as he claimed eventual victory by an eight seconds margin.
After two rounds of the F2 Drivers' Championship, Dunne is now placed in second spot, just one point behind overall leader Fornaroli.
The victory improves upon Dunne's achievements last season when he became the first ever Irish driver to stand on the F3 podium when he finished in second place in the sprint race in Barcelona and he followed this up with another podium finish in Monza.
Competing in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with MP Motorsport, Dunne was named ‘International Driver of the Year’ at the Irish Motorsport Awards 2024.
Round three of the championship will take place next weekend at Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia.
