Clara Musical Society presents 'Sweet Charity'

A vibrant cast from the Clara Musical Society are preparing to bring musical comedy-drama 'Sweet Charity' to stage.

Running from Tuesday, April 8 to Saturday, April 12 at Clara GAA Centre, this production promises to deliver a show filled with laughter, heart, and unforgettable musical numbers.

'Sweet Charity' follows the romantic ups and downs of Charity Hope Valentine, a dance partner-for-hire at a seedy New York City dance hall. Despite her hardships and a string of failed relationships, Charity remains an optimist, believing in love and a better life. When she meets Oscar, a reserved and neurotic actuary, she wonders if true love is finally within her reach.

Featuring a script by Neil Simon and choreography inspired by Bob Fosse, the production is filled with humor, heart, and dazzling dance numbers. Audiences can look forward to classic musical favorites such as Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, The Rhythm of Life, and I’m a Brass Band. With a cast of forty performers and a live orchestra, Sweet Charity promises to be a must-see event for theatre lovers across the Midlands.

Leading the production is the dynamic duo of Director and Musical Director Alan Recks and Choreographer Dylan O'Keeffe, both proud natives of Clara. Alan, a stalwart of Clara Musical Society, will mark his 30th show with the group. Since 1986, he has served as Musical Director for every Tops and Musical production, taking on the additional role of Director in 2006. A highly sought-after musician and director, Alan's expertise continues to be the backbone of the society’s productions.

Joining him is Dylan O’Keeffe, a graduate of the Cork School of Music with a degree in musical theatre. Returning to Clara Musical Society as a choreographer holds special significance for Dylan, having started his musical theatre journey with the society in productions like CATS, All Shook Up, and Chicago.

Clara Musical Society has been a pillar of the local arts community for decades, bringing high-quality musical theatre to audiences in the Midlands. With a dedicated cast and creative team, the society continues to foster local talent and entertain audiences with professional-level performances year after year.
