Offaly Sports Partnership hosts thrilling Over 50s Boccia finals
Offaly Sports Partnership hosted the over 50s Boccia finals, marking another successful year for the league.
Under the guidance of Community Sports Development Officer Denise Coghill, the league has flourished, with fixtures sent out in October and games played until the end of February. The finals, held in March at Mucklagh Community Centre, drew a crowd of wonderful supporters, adding to the atmosphere.
The finals showcased players ranging in age from 92 to their late 50s, with most participants in their 70s and 80s. Boccia, a game similar to indoor bowls, is inclusive of all players over 50. This year's league featured a ladies' league with six teams, a men's league with eight teams, and a mixed league with ten teams. The competition was fierce, with close contests and surprising results right up to the semi-finals.
The finals night exceeded expectations with three thrilling matches. The ladies' final saw Ballycumber triumph over Clonbullogue with a score of 26-11, retaining their plaque. The mixed league final between Birr/Crinkle B and Rahan was a nail-biting affair, with Rahan clinching victory by a single point, 19-18. The men's final between Belmont A and Rahan A was equally exciting, with Belmont A reclaiming the title with a score of 16-9.
Congratulations to all teams for their outstanding performances throughout the league. The event was attended by over 50 enthusiastic supporters, and special thanks go to referees Stephen and Noel for their excellent officiating.
