Gardai issue bogus callers warning to householders
Gardai in Offaly have issued a number of 'red flag' warnings to households in the county urging vigilance as bogus caller and rogue trader incidents continue to be prevalent.
According to the county's Crime Prevention Officer bogus callers are those who call uninvited to a property offering a range of household chores including gardening, power washing, gutter cleaning and painting.
"These individuals typically pressurise homeowners, especially older or isolated residents, into unnecessary, overpriced or substandard work," the Crime Prevention Officer said.
The Crime Prevention Officer detailed a number of 'red flag' warnings which should give cause for household concern.
"Such red flag warnings include cold callers offering services on the spot, claims of working nearby or offering a special deal, no formal identification or paperwork, high-pressure tactics, asking for cash payment and mentioning local names for whom they have worked," the Crime Prevention officer added.
The Crime Prevention Officer has urged householders to remain on high alert and stay in control of any situation which may arise with bogus callers or rogue traders.
"Don’t let a stranger dictate work. You decide what needs doing and you seek out reputable, insured tradespeople, ideally through local recommendation.
"Always request multiple written quotes and never agree to work on the doorstep.
"Use door chains and verify ID.
"Be extra vigilant for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Check in and encourage them to report suspicious callers.
"Report all suspicious activity immediately to Gardaí. Timely information helps prevent others being targeted," the Crime Prevention Officer concluded.
