Wins for Battle and Nolan in Tullamore Harriers 5k race
The annual Tullamore Harriers 5K made a welcome return to the road racing scene on Sunday last. On a glorious, warm, and sunny day, 403 athletes lined up for the start of the Healthy Offaly 5K Race Series, attracting competitors not only from neighbouring clubs but from far and wide.
Tullamore Harriers chairman Adrian Curley gave the athletes the start and immediately Jamie Battle of Mullingar Harriers took the lead, setting a strong pace and securing a convincing victory in 14:48.
The battle for second place was intense, with Kevin Minnock (Tullamore Harriers), Mick Fogarty (Ferbane AC), and Paul Mitchell (Tullamore Harriers) pushing hard in the chasing pack. As they entered the stadium for the final 400 metres, Kevin surged slightly ahead, holding steady to claim second place in 15:41. Mick and Paul followed closely behind, finishing in 15:43 and 15:45, respectively, in what was a very exciting finale.
In the women’s race, Cheryl Nolan of St. Abban's delivered a super performance, finishing as the top female and placing 5th overall with a time of 16:16. Her clubmate Niamh Staunton took second place in 17:34, while another Laois athlete Michelle Keenan (Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC) secured third in 19:01.
The race followed an out-and-back route, starting on Charleville Road, heading towards Ballard before turning back down Charleville Road again. Runners then entered the stadium through the front gate, finishing on the athletic track.
As always, to organise this or any event, the club relies on the help and support of many people. A special thank you to club members, to friends and family who marshalled and helped in the various roles required to ensure a successful event.
Thanks to An Garda Siochana, Offaly County Council and to Offaly Civil Defence. MC for the morning was Dave Fox who did a wonderful job as always.
