Community enthusiasm highlights growing commitment to local ecosystems
Offaly County Council has announced that its upcoming Offaly Biodiversity Conference, scheduled for Friday, March 21, is now fully booked, reflecting strong public interest in protecting the counties natural heritage. The event will bring together experts, policymakers, and communities to discuss projects and strategies for conserving Offaly’s’ unique ecosystems.
The first standalone Offaly Biodiversity Action Plan will be launched on the day by the Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council, Cllr Audrey Hennessy-Kennedy and Chief Executive Anna Marie Delaney. Further to this, Virginia Teehan Chief Executive of The Heritage Council will address attendees, welcoming the publication of Offaly’s plan.
“The event booked out within days, showing a real interest and enthusiasm for the protection and enhancement of biodiversity in the county and support for the publication of Offaly County Councils first standalone Biodiversity Action Plan,” remarked Ricky Whelan, Offaly County Council Biodiversity Officer.
To be held at The Tullamore Court Hotel, the conference will feature expert speakers, and discussions focused on habitat restoration, sustainable land use, and community-led conservation initiatives. Highlights include an overview on the quality and condition of Offaly’s hedgerows for biodiversity following a county hedgerow re-survey in 2024 as well as talks on wetland restoration and community actions to bolster biodiversity in Offaly.
The event will be hosted with support from The Heritage Council and The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
