Birr gaelscoil to showcase its new building at open evening on Thursday

Gaelscoil na Laochra in Birr is busy preparing for an Oíche Oscailte (Open Evening) which will take place at the school between 6 and 8pm on Thursday next, March 20.

The school moved into its brand new state of the art school building on the Tullamore Road last year and is looking forward to showcasing its new school facilities to the local community and any prospective parents.

The school was one of the first school buildings in the country built to passive house specifications and was recently featured in the award-winning Passive House Plus magazine which focusses on the most energy efficient, healthy and sustainable buildings nationally and internationally.

The school has many bright, colourful classrooms and features a dedicated library, robotics and technology room, sensory room and multi-purpose area.

It also has a large area of outdoor space for sports pitches along with a purpose-built basketball court and soft and hard play areas.

The school places a strong focus on STEM education and the arts and have won many awards for their work in this area.

All students have access to an individual ipad and Google chromebook to support their learning, and senior school students take part in VEX Robotics throughout the school year.

School students also have lessons in Irish/sean-nós dancing and have music tutoring weekly from Music Generation.

The students receive training from sports coaches regularly in soccer, athletics and GAA, with their pupils having won the Cumann na mBunscoil A finals in both hurling and gaelic football in recent years with their amalgamated team with St. Brendan's Boys School.

An after-school club is available from Monday to Thursday and all students are free to attend their lunchtime chess, coding, book and Lego clubs.

As a multi-denominational school, the school welcomes children of all faiths and none, and prides itself in creating a warm, supportive environment for all pupils which values each child's unique strengths and interests.
