Oaklands Community College News: Past pupil earns Maynooth scholarship

Congratulations to Robyn Meehan, past pupil of Oaklands Community College who has been awarded a Maynooth University Entrance Scholarship for entry in 2024.

This prestigious scholarship is given to students who achieve 575 points or more in their Leaving Certificate. Robyn’s exceptional results reflect her dedication and hard work, earning her this well-deserved recognition.

She will be pursuing a degree in Media Studies at Maynooth University.

Camogie League Victory for Oaklands

Oaklands CC Camogie team had a fantastic start to their league campaign on a sunny Tuesday winning out over Columba College, Killucan with a scoreline of 5.9 to 3.1. It was a very competitive and sporting game with excellent sportsmanship from both teams. It is fantastic to watch the sport of Camogie growing in Oaklands. A special congratulations to students Claudia, Azahar and Carolina from Spain who played their first ever game of camogie and are really enjoying the cultural immersion of the sport. Oaklands are now looking forward to the next round which takes place this Thursday against Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone.

Busy week for STEM in Oaklands

A group of talented 1st-year students from Oaklands CC recently participated in the highly anticipated Lego League Competition in Tullamore, run by Laois Offaly ETB, where they demonstrated excellent teamwork and innovation.

Their performance was nothing short of impressive, and they walked away with the prestigious Best Teamwork Award.

Harrison Hampton, James Owens Nash, Roberto Sorce, Rocco Fennessy, Callum Kenna, and Joe Cassidy ahead of the Vex National Robotics Championship last week in Cork.

The team, comprising Tommy Phelan, Cillian McDonnell, Zach Muldowney, Jace O'Connor, Jake Kerrigan, and Ashton Kenny, showcased their ability to work together under pressure, communicate effectively, and tackle complex tasks.

Earlier in January, six 5th year students won an award at the Senior Robotics Competition in Tullamore and earned themselves a spot at the Vex National Robotics Championship last week where they faced off against 25 other teams from across Ireland.

This event brought together the brightest young minds in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) The Robotics Team composed of Harrison Hampton, James Owens Nash, Roberto Sorce, Rocco Fennessy, Callum Kenna, and Joe Cassidy who demonstrated their impressive robotics skills, engineering expertise, and teamwork throughout the event.
