TD welcomes extension of Coláiste Choilm in Tullamore with work to start soon
Offaly TD Tony McCormack has welcomed news that construction work is due to commence shortly on a significant expansion of facilities at Coláiste Choilm secondary school in Tullamore.
The project is set to include the addition of three mainstream classrooms, one technology room, two science labs, one design and communication graphics (DCG) room, one art room, one multimedia room and a two-classroom special educational needs (SEN) base.
Deputy McCormack said that a contractor was in place for the project, and he was hopeful that work on it would commence within the next 4-6 weeks or so.
He described the project as a very positive development for education in Tullamore, saying it would provide more space, better facilities, and more opportunities for local students.
"This is a major step forward in ensuring that children in our community have access to high-quality education without having to travel outside the jurisdiction to find a suitable school place," said Deputy McCormack.
He added that the addition of two special classes was "particularly significant," in that would provide much-needed support for students who require additional resources.
The Fianna Fáil TD said this project has been a priority of his, and that he had been working closely on it with his Dáil predecessor, and current MEP, Barry Cowen.
"As a past pupil of the Brothers, I know firsthand the incredible role Coláiste Choilm plays in our community," said Deputy McCormack.
"This extension is not just about bricks and mortar — it’s about giving every child the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and well-equipped learning environment.
"The inclusion of two special classes is a crucial step forward, but we need to do more. There is a growing demand for special education places in Offaly, and I am committed to ensuring that every child has access to the education they deserve, without having to leave their own county."
Deputy McCormack said he was actively working with several other schools across Offaly to secure better facilities and additional special education classes.
"Every child has the right to a proper education, and that means having the right facilities in place. We need more special classes at both primary and secondary level, and I will continue to push for these improvements.
"Coláiste Choilm’s extension is a big step forward, but it’s just the beginning. I want to see every school in Offaly properly resourced to meet the needs of all students," he said.
