Offaly boxer 'left it all in the ring' at tournament in Bulgaria
Offaly boxer and Defence Forces member Brian Kennedy has bowed out of the prestigious Strandja Memorial multi-nations boxing tournament in Bulgaria.
In what was his first time boxing for Ireland, the Daingean man put in a gallant display against French champion Aboulaye Traore but ultimately came up short in their contest yesterday (Tuesday).
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association praised Kennedy for "leaving it all in the ring" against Traore, adding that he had "gained experience which will stand to him".
The son of John and Anna Kennedy from Main Street, Daingean, Kennedy boxes out of the St Brigid's Boxing Club in Edenderry and was selected for the Irish team at 86kg after winning the National Elite title in that weight category last November.
The Defence Forces boxing team paid tribute to the local man after he secured his place at the prestigious Strandja tournament in Sofia.
"Reaching this stage is a remarkable achievement, and Brian’s journey has been marked by dedication and hard work. His preparation has been outstanding, training extensively with both the Irish Elite Team and Defence Forces Boxing coaches," stated a social media post on behalf of the Defence Forces Boxing Team.
Six Irish boxers are competing at the tournament in Bulgaria today (Wednesday), with medals for Team Ireland already secured by Ciara Walsh, at 48kg, and Jack Marley, at 92kg.
