Mountbolus cyclist raises funds for Sightsavers Ireland on solo expedition

A feat to be revered, Mountbolus cyclist Sinéad Greenan has successfully completed an incredible 840km solo cycling journey across Sri Lanka, raising over €7,800 so far for Sightsavers Ireland.

Sinéad embarked on the challenge on January 11, returning two weeks later after cycling six to eight hours daily in sweltering 30 degree heat. She is aiming to raise €8,400 in total – €10 for every kilometer she cycled.

Driven by her own experience as a person with a visual impairment, Sinéad undertook this challenge to support Sightsavers Ireland's vital work in preventing avoidable blindness and promoting eye health in low and middle income countries.

“I was born with congenital cataracts and subsequently developed glaucoma for which I take medication for daily.

“I am immensely grateful for the expert medical intervention I receive, by virtue of the country I live in. I would love to provide the same opportunities to children and adults with eye conditions who are in less fortunate positions than me," she wrote on her fundraising page.

"Sinéad's dedication and courage to take on such a solo adventure are truly inspiring.

"We are delighted that Sinéad chose to support Sightsavers Ireland and the funds she has raised will have a significant impact on our programmes, enabling us to provide essential eye care services, treatments, and surgeries to communities in need. We are immensely grateful for her incredible contribution," Emma Murphy, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Sightsavers Ireland, said.

Funds raised by Sinéad will directly support Sightsavers Ireland's work in providing access to eye care, tackling neglected tropical diseases and championing the rights of people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries across Africa and Asia.

Since Sightsavers was founded in 1950, the organisation has carried out 9.25 million cataract operations and trained 350,000 people with disabilities to support their income generation.
