The late John McGowan

Community in mourning after passing of 'proud Tullamore man, Harrier, and true blue'

The passing of long-time Tullamore Harriers member and proud Tullamore man John McGowan has cast a dark cloud of mourning over the community in recent days.

John was known as a man of great character, who always had a smile and a moment to spare for those who needed him.

His passing comes after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease, with John inspiring the recent 12-hour challenge by Athlone Triathlon Club.

John passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 8, in the wonderful care of the staff in Esker Rí Nursing Home, Clara, surrounded by his loving family.

He is predeceased by his parents Bernie and Maureen, and will be sadly missed by his loving family Paul, Karen and Maureen, wife Lynda, his adored grandchildren, brothers Tom, Brian and Aiden, sisters Anne and Dympna, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A statement of condolence by the Tulllamore Harriers chairman, Adrian Curley, read: “A dark cloud hangs over the Tullamore Harriers Club, having received the very sad news that one of the club’s favourite sons, John McGowan, has gone to his eternal reward.

“The love affair between John and the Tullamore Harriers Club started in the late 60’s, when a young 12 year old boy wandered into the old clubhouse in Offaly Street.

“Although small in stature John was more than able to compete and often surpassed his peers. Many who knew John during his juvenile career, often remarked on his tremendous energy and determination.

“John reconnected with the club in later years having lived abroad for some years. John quickly immersed himself in the club as an athlete, volunteer, and a committee member. John was ever willing to help and support the club’s efforts. When the call went out for help, John was the first to raise his hand, and always with a smile on his face and a glint in his eye.

“John was a cherished club mate and friend to all the members of Tullamore Harriers. The bravery and dignity shown by John in the face of his diagnosis with MND ,was nothing short of astonishing. He has now slipped the shackles of this terrible illness and is a free spirit once more. We shall cherish the memories of the time we spent together.”

John will be reposing at O'Reilly's Funeral Home, Harbour Street, Tullamore, on Monday from 6pm until Rosary at 8pm. Removal to the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore, will take place on Tuesday morning, arriving for Funeral Mass at 10am.
