Clendennen calls for modular units at Tullamore school in first Dáil speech
Offaly Fine Gael TD John Clendennen yesterday (Wednesday) made his first contribution on the floor of Dáil Eireann.
In his maiden address to the national parliament since his election late last year, the Kinnitty man extended his gratitude to his supporters before moving on to highlight the need for modular units to be put in place to help address overcrowding at Charleville National School in Tullamore.
"As this is my first time taking to my feet in the Chamber, I want to start by acknowledging, and expressing my sincere gratitude to, the people of Offaly, who have entrusted me with the great honour of representing them in Dáil Éireann, and also my wife, son, family, friends and supporters, who have stood by me every step of the way. I thank them sincerely," said John Clendennen.
He went on to day that he had recently visited Charleville National School and had "noted at first hand the increased pressure because of overcrowding" there.
"I firmly believe the dedicated and committed teachers and staff, the students and their families deserve a fit-for-purpose and modern facility.
"I ask that it be prioritised, with two units put in place by the summer to cater for the ever-increasing number of students entering the school, a trend that will continue from September 2025," he said.
In response, the new Minister for Education, Helen McEntee, acknowledged "how important this school project is," not just for Deputy Clendennen but also for the wider community.
"I look forward to working with the Deputy and, indeed, the school he has mentioned to ensure modular units can be put in place on site as quickly as possible, particularly for the year starting in September," said Minister McEntee.
