Passing of dedicated Offaly public servant

The funeral took place last weekend of one of Offaly's most dedicated public servants.

Sean Mac Cartain, Killlurin, Tullamore, a native of the Horseleap area, had been CEO of Offaly VEC for 15 years, from 1980 to 1995.

Mac Cartain was the youngest son of the late Patrick and Catherine (née Geoghegan) Carton Newtown, Horseleap.

He qualified as an school teacher and was former principal of Naas Vocational School before taking the reins at Offaly VEC for 15 years.

He also served during that time on Offaly County Enterprise Board and on the Offaly County Development team.

He passed away on Wednesday, January 22, peacefully at the Regional Hospital Tullamore.

Pre-deceased by his brothers Michael, Joseph, Francis and Patrick. Seán will be sadly missed by his loving wife Máire and family Caitríona, Róisín, Eoin and Micheál, son in law Dick, daughters in law Nuala and Elisabeth, his adored grandchildren Finian, Rosie, Muireann, Mary, Patrick and Peter, granddaughter in law Muireann, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

The late Sean Mac Cartain's funeral mass took place in St. Patrick's Church, Killeigh, on Saturday, January 25, with burial in Kilcurley Cemetery, Tubber.
