McDonnell concerned over impact of Daingean Active Travel plan

Edenderry Councillor Fergus McDonnell this week expressed concern on the impact of the proposed Active Travel Plan proposals for Daingean.

Councillor McDonnell said he fully supported improving public and road safety for everyone not just in Daingean, but throughout the county and nationally, but the plan now out for public consultation, if implemented as drafted, he said would "most definitely have a serious impact on the economic viability of two local businesses in Daingean".

Cllr McDonnell said he acknowledged the draft plan included some positive elements, but other equally important measures are not taken into account.

"Daingean town like every other town in the county has suffered economically due to job losses, predominately Bord Na Mona and ESB jobs in Daingean," he said, before expressing concern over jobs in particular businesses in the town.

He called on members of the public to access the Draft Active Travel Plan available in Daingean library, Edenderry Town hall or on www.offaly.ie, and advised those interested in making submissions to do so before 12 noon on February 28.

He said it is proposed to host a public meeting on the issue in Daingean in the near future so that members of the public may have their say.
