Proposed works to R402 and L1017 as part of Daingean Active Travel Scheme
By Rebekah O'Reilly
A number of works have been proposed along the Edenderry Road (R402)/Croghan Road (L1017) as part of the Daingean Active Travel Scheme.
The proposal for the upgrades to the public realm of Daingean fall under the National Transport Authority (NTA) Investment, which was introduced in 2021 and is one of a series of measures designed to increase the number of walking and cycling networks in Ireland.
The NTA Investment Programme aims for walking, cycling and public transport to account for 50% of all journeys made by 2030.
The proposed work will include widening of existing road to facilitate new widened footpaths, the installation of pedestrian crossings, improvements to the public lighting, surface water drainage infrastructure, and junction tightening works, as well as the removal and replanting of trees to facilitate work on the footpath.
The relocation of existing disability parking spaces and the provision of additional Age Friendly parking is also mentioned in the plans for the rejuvenation of the town.
The aim of this project is to provide traffic calming and safety enhancements for pedestrian and cyclists, with an aim of increasing pedestrian activity and reducing the use of vehicles for local trips.
