Offaly stand up comedy competition opens for 2025
The search has begun for the latest round of wannabie comedians in Offaly, as the Tullamore Rotary Club's Strictly Stand Up makes its return in the new year.
Now in its eight year, the event sees Karl Spain take ten locals that would like to try their hand at stand up, and give them three workshop sessions before they take to the stage. The winner will be crowned the King or Queen of Comedy for 2025.
The Rotary Club of Tullamore has used this event in the past to raise funds for many worthy charities.
This year's event will take place in the Esker Arts Centre, Tullamore, on January 31, and is in aid of the new pitch development at Tullamore Rugby Club.
Recently-elected Offaly TD Tony McCormack, who was a Strictly Stand Up contestant in 2017, posted on Facebook about the 2025 edition of the event.
“It’s a great opportunity for local people from across the community who would like to try comedy for the first time,” he said.
Other politicians that have dabbled in stand up in the past have included MEP Barry Cowen, recently-elected TD John Clendennen, and former TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy. Members of the clergy have also taken part, including Fr Shane Crombie and Rev. William Hayes.
The 2024 'King of Comedy' was local Ciaran Kelly.
Applications are now open for the 2025 competition. In his post, Deputy McCormack said, “Text me if you are interested in taking part. I promise you won’t regret it, it’s a fantastic fun night.”
