Fine Gael accused of 'disinterest' in West Offaly communities
An outgoing Cabinet Minister has hit out at what she described as “the continual disinterest' shown by Fine Gael Ministers to communities in West Offaly.
Senator Pippa Hackett said, as a result, West Offaly has been disadvantaged when it comes to tourism, flood management and protection of the Shannon Callows.
“I have worked with communities from Banagher, to Belmont and Shannonbridge and up to Clonfanlough, and they want to play their part in determining their own future, while preserving their local heritage.
“I have also repeatedly engaged with the Ministers responsible for the OPW - which plays a significant role in the management of historical sites such as Clonmacnoise, as well as management of rivers such as the Shannon.
"I have highlighted to them on numerous occasions the concerns and desires of these local communities, and given them the opportunity to take on board local knowledge; but unfortunately, they repeatedly chose to ignore it. Despite repeated requests to engage with community representatives, Fine Gael has ignored these asks, and has ignored these communities.
"Retaining Offaly’s cultural, industrial and natural heritage will be crucial if we are to fully embrace a brighter future for the communities of the Faithful County. Listening to local communities is key to this.
"And now it's up to Offaly voters if they want to return TD's that will continue to ignore the voices of communities or push for them to be heard."
