The retirement of Mr John Lydon has left a lasting impact on the school community at Coláiste Choilm secondary school in Tullamore.
Students and staff lined the halls of the school as beloved teacher Mr Lydon made his way to the sports hall for a ceremony to celebrate his time at the school.
The Mayo native took up his post in Coláiste Choilm in 1989, and it was his very first teaching role.
“He made a significant impact on both the teaching staff and the students. All of us would hold him in the highest esteem,” said Principal Tadhg O'Sullivan.
After 35 years in the school, John's impact went beyond the classroom as he aimed to build lasting relationships with all those in the school community.
“Mr Lydon had a passion for teaching both English and PE. In addition to teaching he was a year head, and he was actively involved in extra curricular activities – particularly football.”
His impact on those in the school was clear to see on the day of his retirement celebration, with both students and staff alike cheering him on, giving him high-fives and hugs as he passed through the halls.
Prinicpal O'Sullivan said: “John was devoted to growing and nurturing relationships with both staff and students.
“He will be greatly missed. We will never forget the great contributions he made to the school, and the relationships he built. We wish him all the best going forward.”
