Tullamore Credit Union donates €5,000 to Concern Sudan Appeal

Representatives from Concern Worldwide have extended their sincere thanks to Tullamore Credit Union for their generous donation of €5,000, on behalf of their members, to support those affected by the current humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The donation comes via Tullamore Credit Union’s ‘Our World Fund’, which was established several years ago to support people in the developing world.

“This €5,000 will make a truly meaningful difference in the lives of people in Sudan forced to flee their homes after more than 17 months of conflict" said Justine McNinch, Concern Corporate Fundraising Manager, who added that the country is currently experiencing "the world’s largest humanitarian crisis; it very much has become a forgotten war."

Ms. McNinch said Concern is "incredibly grateful" for the generous donation from Tullamore Credit Union, which she described as being "badly needed" given that 25 million Sudanese people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance, more than half of the country’s population.

She added that famine-like conditions have been declared at a camp in North Darfur, and it is plausible that there are similar conditions in two other areas. It is estimated that 755,000 people (nine times the population of Offaly) will face famine-like conditions in Sudan in the coming months. Since the beginning of 2024, Concern’s team in Sudan has supported over 234,000 people in West Darfur, West Kordofan, South Kordofan and Red Sea State. It’s also working in the neighbouring countries of Chad and South Sudan to support people who have fled over the border to find safety.

Ms McNinch was presented with the donation by Liam O’Callaghan, Chairperson and Paul Shaw CEO Tullamore Credit Union in Tullamore last week.
