Cowen calls for EU support for HVO as sustainable heat fuel

During this week’s plenary session, MEP Barry Cowen called on the European Commission to support the designation of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable heat fuel.

In a sharp criticism of Ireland's climate policy, Cowen voiced his frustration with the current Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan, and his unwillingness to acknowledge the benefits of HVO. “In Ireland, we’ve got a Green Climate Action Minister who refuses to allow HVO to make a contribution in reducing household emissions by 90% over 10 years – figure that one out!” Cowen told his fellow MEPs during the debate.

HVO is a renewable fuel derived from waste and residues, and has been identified as a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Cowen highlighted the urgent need for the EU to embrace HVO as part of its broader climate strategy, stressing its potential to drastically reduce household emissions across Europe.
