Offaly Libraries to host special Irish translations Comic Con event in Tullamore

Offaly Libraries will host a special Irish translations Comic Con event in Tullamore Public Library this weekend.

The talk begins at 10am on Saturday September 14 in the Tullamore Public Library.

The event will be hosted by Seanán Ó Coistín, from Gliadar, the publisher for the Irish translation of the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim. He will share how he translated strange English comic words into the Irish language.

How does a reader make sense of words such as KPOK, SWOK, KROWW, WHAP, KCHAK, WROK, WA-POW, SHWAA, KLONG, ZAAAHH, WHF, WUMP, ZWEE, WHZZAK, ZWIP, SWAK, FWUMP, PTANG.

The Irish alphabet does not have the letters J, K, Q, V, W, X, Y and Z, so how would such crazy words be translated into Irish?

Seanán will explain the way that he was able to find the best Irish-language equivalent of those nonsensical words.

The Irish dictionaries are over-flowing with many suitable words for comics and graphic novels, and Seanán used them to best effect when translating Scott Pilgrim.

All age groups are welcome, and it doesn’t matter if you speak Irish or not as the presentation will be done in English. No booking is required.

Visitors to the Offaly Libraries Comic Con will be able to buy Scott Pilgrim at the event.
