The Westport to Sligo Charity Cycle team

Cyclists use bike trip to raise funds for Offaly Down Sydrome

A group of friends with a love of cycling have together raised over €4,000 for Offaly Down Syndrome Association

The team, composed of Christopher Todd, Daragh Fogarty, Ross Cooke, Bogdan Hrechka, Jonah Craig, and Ian Craig, raised €4,011.33 by undertaking a cycling challenge from Westport to Sligo.

They were inspired to dedicate their trip to fundraising for Offaly Down Syndrome following the birth of Christopher's nephew with the condition.

The journey covered over 140 kilometers across the scenic landscapes of the West of Ireland, showcasing the team members' physical endurance as well as their unwavering support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Christopher said, “This is the third year that my friends and I have done a harebrained bike trip to raise funds for charity.

“The first year, we raised funds for Sligo Cancer Support Centre, as they supported our friend Jonah and his family while his mother battled cancer. The second year, in support of our Ukrainian friend, Bogdan, we raised funds for Nova Ukraine to aid in their stance against Russia.

“This year, my nephew Senan was born with Down Syndrome. The eyes of my family were opened to a very different world to what we were used to. There was a lot of uncertainty as to what the future would hold for him.

“Through Offaly Down Syndrome, my brother and his wife have received invaluable support and met truly incredible people who have shown that Senan's future will be as bright as anyone else's.

“So, when I suggested to the group that we use our cycle to raise funds for Offaly DS this year, it was a no-brainer.”

Commenting on the fundraiser, Offaly Down Syndrome Association Branch Administrator Robbie Donnelly said, “We are truly overwhelmed by the generosity and effort put forth by Christopher and his colleagues. Taking on such a challenging cycle is no small feat, and we are deeply appreciative of their commitment to our cause.

“This remarkable achievement has not only raised much-needed funds but has also brought greater awareness to the work of Offaly Down Syndrome Association and the challenges faced by individuals with Down syndrome.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported the team, whether through donations, encouragement, or logistical assistance. Your support is invaluable and deeply appreciated by all of us at Offaly Down Syndrome Association.”
