'Big attendance' sought at meeting on possible closure of Kinnitty post office

A public meeting is set to take place on Wednesday next (September 4) to discuss the potential closure of Kinnitty's post office.

The meeting has been arranged for Kinnitty Community Centre at 7.30pm, and a representative of An Post is due to attend.

Earlier this week, Offaly TD Carol Nolan said she had been informed by An Post that it plans to proceed with the closure of Kinnitty post office in mid-October, which would result in the the transfer of its services to Birr Post Office.

The situation has arisen due to the retirement of Kinnitty's long-serving post mistress Breda Byrne.

Sharing details of the upcoming public meeting, local councillor John Clendennen said he hoped to see "a large attendance" at it next Wednesday.

"No retail business can operate without a property or a person, if we want to keep a post office in Kinnitty we need to identify both in the coming weeks," said Cllr Clendennen.

"A representative from A Post will attend to answer any questions, and hopefully we'll reach a positive solution."
