Birr pram race of 1983 revisited in RTÉ Archives footage

A Birr parade with a difference, which took place just over 40 years ago, was recalled in footage shared by RTÉ Archives this week.

On August 26, 1983, the Blockbuster series on RTÉ aired a report in which broadcasters Mary FitzGerald and Aonghus McAnally competed in a pram race that was staged as part of the 15th Birr Vintage Week, held that year.

The report shows pairs of adults competing in the light-hearted contest, with one serving as 'the mother' and the other as 'the baby'.

Mary FitzGerald and Aonghus McAnally took to their respective roles with gusto, and were followed through the streets of the town by delighted young vintage week attendees.
