Alzheimer’s Memory Walk returns for fifth year
The Alzheimer’s Memory Walk returns to for it's fifth year.
The Offaly date is set for September 22 at Lough Boora Discovery Park, and Dr Fergus Timmons from The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is urging the people to get involved.
The event is a national initiative, with this year's walk said to be the biggest yet.
Speaking ahead of Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, Fergus said: “I am really looking forward to Memory Walk in Offaly again this year. I attended last year and despite the weather there was a great atmosphere.
"It was so nice to see people who have been impacted by dementia, and others who were just showing solidarity, come out in force and walk on the day. It was a celebration in a way, and a tribute to people whose lives have been impacted by dementia."
Memory Walk honours, remembers, and celebrates the 64,000 people in Ireland living with dementia, along with their families and carers. It also cherishes the memory of those who are no longer with us.
In 2023, 3,500 walkers participated in Memory Walk and raised over €120,000 which helped fund vital services for people with dementia, including Daycare, Daycare at Home, Family Carer Training, Social Clubs, Cafés, and a National Helpline.
Fergus continued: "This year we are walking in the beautiful surrounds of Lough Boora - it is peaceful and perfect for walking and there is a fantastic coffee shop where we can get some refreshments after the walk.
"I hope as many as possible turn out on the day to support people living with dementia and their families and supporters."
