Shinrone Heritage Group to host unique 'Gowns and Graves' events

Shinrone Heritage Group are hosting two unique talks this week as part of their 'Gowns and Graves' event.

Both events are on in Shinrone Community Centre at 7.30pm.

The first event, titled Unstitching The Shinrone Gown, will take place on Friday August 23.

The event will explore the history of this famous dress which was found outside the Village in 1843.

As part of the evening Kass McGann, from Holland, will be giving a talk on the history of the Shinrone Gown and its context and importance to our understanding of Irish dress-making in the Ireland of the 1620s.

Rosalind Fanning and Bernie Stapleton will be sharing their journey on how they went about recreating the Shinrone Gown using 17thC dress-making techniques, and revealing the beautiful replica on the evening.

Adding to the evening will be a wonderful demonstration of spinning with Janet White Spunner and friends.

On Saturday 24th a second event will see historian Stephen Callaghan share his findings from the ‘A Grave Story’ research project.

Stephen has been surveying the memorials of St. Mary’s Church, Shinrone which has a long and rich tradition in the Village going back to the medieval period.

Among the many discoveries is an unrecorded subterranean crypt, which is likely one of the oldest in the county.

Refreshments afterward and all are very welcome to come along. Further information on both events from Ger Murphy on 087 101 5991 or clareenhouse@hotmail.com
